Power Yoga, also known as Vinyasa Flow Yoga, is a modern style of yoga that draws primarily upon the Ashtanga tradition. You might think of Power Yoga as "freestyle" Ashtanga. Whereas Ashtanga classes are taught according to a strict sequence of poses as established by K. Pattabhi Jois, Power Yoga classes offer a looser interpretation of the yoga asanas (postures), allowing students to explore asanas from all six Ashtanga series, as well as many fun variations and modifications.
What are the benefits of doing yoga?
People tend to get many different things out of yoga, depending on their personality and the type(s) of yoga they practice. Power/Vinyasa Flow Yoga in particular promotes good cardiovascular health, muscular toning, flexibility, core strength, balance, and a healthy body image/weight. People who practice this type of yoga also report an increased ability to focus, reduced stress levels, and better sleep.
Do I need to be flexible to do yoga?
Flexibility is NOT a prerequisite for starting a yoga practice. Power Yoga in particular is about strength and flexibility, and you will develop both as you continue to practice.
(We do have a limited number of spare mats at the studio, as well as plenty of props.)
What is the 'community class'?
Our weekly community class on Saturdays is Bloomington Power Yoga's offering to the local yoga community. The community class is a donation-based class, and we suggest a $5 donation per student. For more information about the community class, click here.
Can I do this style of yoga if I have an injury?
Power Yoga and Ashtanga classes are not recommended if you have a serious or on-going injury, unless you know how to modify the poses to ensure your own safety.
